The New Leader of the Philippine Republic

The only son of the martyred Ninoy Aquino and former President Cory Aquino, Noynoy has finally come of age to continue the Filipino People's quest for Freedom from corruption, Clean, Honest, and Transparent Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, a Philippines showing its true Strength and Wealth! The Filipinos has come of Age. The time has come for the impossible dream to become... Possible again!

One might say that President Noynoy’s ascent to the highest office of the land occurred largely because of “the energy of divine grace.” First, his image as the son of “revered democracy icons Ninoy Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino” undeniably contributed a lot to the positive response he got from majority of the electorate. When his mother died from cancer last year, the quiet politician was urged to run for the presidency and submitted that his decision was influenced largely by the fateful events in his family’s life.

In reference to the number 15’s “new life” meaning, the Liberal Party’s campaign dwelt mainly on the promise to stay clean, as well as to act against corruption and poverty, which he reiterated when he was proclaimed last June 9. “As president, we will be in a position to effect the necessary changes,” he is quoted in an online report after the proclamation. “With the backing of the people, I don’t think anything is impossible.”

It is also worthy of note that in the official congressional count, Noynoy defeated his eight rivals with more than “15” million votes, almost six million votes ahead of his closest opponent, former President Joseph Estrada.

In spite of grumblings of a possible electoral fraud (so what else is new?), I don’t think anyone can argue against Noynoy’s popularity at the polls. It’s true that he has his share of “critics and haters,” to quote SPOT.ph, but it seems the general consensus is that he represents new hope. With his win, Filipinos are once again raring to see some changes in the country that has rapidly sunk in reputation and been flooded with issues of corruption.

What the 15th president will inherit though, is a lot of problems. Aside from unresolved cases of corruption, the country is suffering from rising poverty and hunger, violence and unrest in the south, political problems and a bad case of political distrust. The people may be eager for change, but we are not as easy to convince anymore. President Aquino will have his work cut out for him.

Leaders of other nations have already congratulated President Noynoy Aquino and Vice President
Jejomar Binay, who will hold office starting July 1, 2010 until June 30, 2016.

Let’s hope this surge of support won’t wane (or that his victory will prove to be just “15 minutes of fame,” so to speak). While we wait to see how Aquino will prove himself, let’s not wait to do our part in giving the country’s “new life” ourselves.
